I don’t mean to be rude or extreme but this is exactly what it’s parallel with in my head.

It’s like knowing that someone is a serial killer and helping them to hide the body.

Accomplices are pretty much just as bad as the people who did it.

This is also to people that tell me, “Well I’m not the one killing them so I’m not in the wrong.” It’s bad enough that you embrace murder and torture in such a way even if it doesn’t directly involve you.

I’m really not trying not to be biased because I’m vegan but I can’t think of an up side to this other than having yummy food which is perfectly do-able with meat substitutes.

“The murder or someone is a lot worse than the murder of an animal”? It’s still a life at the end of the day. It’s true - animals lives are more meaningless than our lives…well it’s true! That doesn’t mean they deserve to be tortured and killed for our benefit just because they dont have the capability to stop it themselves.

I was vegetarian for nearly three years and vegan for the seven after that. I gave it up for health reasons, partly because I had a vitamin B12 deficiency and I developed an allergy to soya products. I’ve researched a lot on this kind of thing, and if you buy humanely reared and killed meat, then I see no problem with eating it. I always ask vegetarians and vegans the same questions: if you had a pet that was in extreme pain, would you rather have it put down or let it suffer? Would you rather an animal was raised on a humane farm, (I’m not talking about battery farms here,) killed in a humane way and then turned into a product which will sustain someone for a while, or would you rather they lived in a field without any vetenary care, became ill and either died a painful death or starved to death for nothing?

These are just my views of course, and I do respect vegetarians and vegans for doing what they do because I was the same up until recently. I just with that vegetarians and vegans let meat eaters have their opinions as well, instead of decrying them for being cruel killers at every opportunity.

With the rise in cheap meat products such as fast food, can you blame people for not wanting to spend £4 on a meat substitute for one meal when they can buy a meat product that will give them three, maybe even four meals, for the same amount of money?

The pet thing: of course I’d put it down if it were suffering but I don’t think the animals that are being killed would be suffering at all prior to the suffering they’re made to undergo for meat. If animals are in pain that’s totally unrelated to them being used for meat and such, I would have no problem eating it because they would have been put down for a good cause. Do you mean they’re in pain beforehand?

Oh and I’d start eating meat again if I became sick because of it as I’d have to, it wouldn’t make me happy though.

I’m willing to let meat-eaters have their own opinion too which is why I was trying not to seem like I was pushing my views on people, I was just saying what I personally think. Though some meat-eaters are different, some really don’t give a fuck about it at all, not all meat-eaters are like that though of course.

Yeah it’s unfortunate that the price of something decides things for people in such a way. A lot of people have told me that some of the stuff I eat costs a lot but money doesn’t matter to me in that way, I’m willing to spend more for something that I believe in. Some people are poor though and you can’t blame them too much for wanting to save money.

I only ask about the pet thing because a lot of vegetarians and vegans would do that, yet they wouldn’t eat meat. I (personally) don’t see much of a difference between putting an animal out of its misery and killing one for food. A life is still a life. A death is still a death.

I never said that you did, I mean the majority of vegetarians and vegans seem reluctant to just accept that the majority of people are going to eat meat/fish/dairy products. Me and my flatmates only eat meat that is humanely reared, (there’s a farmers market near us, we only buy meat from there, usually, unless we’re desperate for something to eat or we can’t afford it.) I personally don’t really like eating meat unless I know it’s been humanely raised and killed.

A lot of the people I know who eat meat are students. It’s a cliché but we don’t have much money, and it is easier and cheaper for a lot of my friends to buy the cheap meat and dairy products where, yeah, the animals were probably raised on battery farms, but as you said, with current economic issues, a lot of people who may have bought organic, humanely reared before the recession won’t be able to afford to buy that kind of meat anymore, so they’ll buy the cheap stuff that’s all MRM and such.

As I said, I only eat meat and fish because I have to. I still don’t wear leather and I only tend to eat meat a couple of times a week. Left to me, I’d probably still be vegan, but when it’s my health or a dead animal on the line, I hate to say it but I put myself first.

I still admire you regardless because you care and because your health was at risk. :) I care more about my health than a dead animal too, but I think I’d let myself go pretty far, health-wise before I chose to eat meat again. Hopefully I’ll be able to stay vegan for as long as I can while being of moderate health [my health’s never been 100% so I can’t say ‘good health’ :P].

I got to the point where I wasn’t eating meat subsitutes because they all had soya in them, so I was living on vegetables, literally. I got pretty ill and even tried vitamin substitutes to try to up my B12 levels and stuff, but they didn’t work. So it was kind of a last resort.

I know a lot of people who’ve been vegan for a long, long time and who’ve never had any health issues, so I’m hoping you’ll be the same! :]
